Frequently Asked Questions
We know that visiting a new church can be an intimidating experience. Here are some questions commonly asked by newcomers:
What does "independent, non-denominational" mean?
Non-Denominational / Independent churches are churches which have not joined a denomination or association of churches. Each local congregation is independent of any other congregation, autonomous, self-regulating, self-governing and fully self-supporting. We answer to the authority of Jesus Christ rather than a denominational body. We select and support our own missionaries, elect our own leaders and support ministries and groups that believe as we believe.
How big is your church?
Canaan Bible Chapel typically has about 250 people attending on a Sunday morning.
Do I have to be a member to attend?
No! Our doors and services are open to anyone who is sincerely seeking to worship God and learn more about Him through His Word, the Bible.
How should I dress to attend church?
Dress comfortably! We don't focus on what people wear. Some people like to dress up to attend church, while others prefer to dress more casually. It is up to you. Most people in our church dress in a "nice casual" manner. In the summer, attire tends to be more casual than the cooler months. You'll see jeans, dresses, and sports coats. We suggest something that is conducive to worship and being in God's house.
How long is the church service?
A typical service is about an hour in length.
What is the music like?
Our music is a conservative blend of traditional and contemporary hymns, choruses, and praise songs.
How would you describe the messages your pastor gives?
Messages are based on the text of Scripture. Most of the messages preached at Canaan are expository in nature (based on a specific passage of Scripture), yet we also enjoy topical preaching from time to time.
What kinds of children's programs are offered?
Before the Sunday morning worship service, at 8:45 AM, children attend Sunday school. These are classes that meet by age group and teach biblical principles in an age-appropriate way. During the worship service that follows, younger children, ages 3-5, are dismissed just before the sermon to attend Children's Church - a special group activity that provides games, crafts and a short lesson from the Bible. There is a fully trained, screened nursery staff on hand each service to tend to infants and toddlers.
Do I have to pay anything?
No. While we do take an offering during our Sunday services, we do not want our guests to feel obligated to participate. The offering is primarily a time for those who have made Canaan Bible Chapel their home church to give back to God a portion of what He has given them. Offerings are used to defray the expenses associated with the church, as well as our outreach and missions.
What does this church believe?
See What We Believe - Our doctrinal statement
Where does the church stand politically?
We believe it is important for people to be involved with the political process but we, as a church, are politically neutral.
Do I have to become a member to attend regularly?
No, we have many regular attendees who are not officially joined to the church through membership. We do have requirements and a process for membership. But we encourage all people to attend our services and activities.
