I said just a minute a moment ago I said to pass the ride from here well here we go when we come you'll see chance after 4 and then there's a certain benefit preaching in an expository fashion whether it's going through chapters of the Bible or whether it's working your way through a book to the Bible over a. Of time and that is it sometimes you get the opportunity to preach on things that you might hesitate to John at other occasions and this is one of those passages because sometimes what I'm going to share with you can be presented in a way that might come across as being very self-serving and then after and then after the announcement of his passwords music and Sunday then I'm really like oh boy do I change the message now but we're not going to we're not going to do that in the past you have heard both myself as well as Pastor Nick say when we preach we don't just preach to you but we're also preteen ourselves and I understand it's not just at this moment that we begin to preach to ourselves but as we're working through a passage from find God's word impacting our thinking impacting Our Lives impacting every aspect of our being our families our Ministries absolutely true but on occasion there are passages that challenge us even more than others they are passages that are intensely personal because it's almost as if Paul or whoever is writing in the MoMA says now let me play just shut everybody else down and let me talk to the pastor for just a minute it's kind of a operative example is when we have our commencement exercises at the end of did the school year and those graduates in this year are graduating class has three students in our graduating class and when when the speaker comes to speak to them often say something like this now my challenges for the student my challenge is going to graduate and sometimes they'll even turn the podium so that they're facing down and then the Speaker gets all of his permission to listen in because there is still much value from the word of all of us whether that particular message is directed to us or not Ephesians 4 verses 11 and 12 have been I will say very specifically Indian that Pastor Nick and myself as a reminder of what Ministry out of look like the role that it plays in the overall plan of God for the ministry of his of his church in this is one of those passages that I will admit to being much convicted drug sweet in Spanish which area is even areas that I will touch on today curious and wish I asked. How my role in Ministry need to change so that I can come in the greater Conformity it was were some of you might be somebody lyrics if you're into appalling research especially in regard to the church you might be familiar with the name the name of Thom Rainer Ministry for many many years the church has been to take polls of churches and other organizations to get a sense of weird things stand what is the current state of the church as it is in alignment with the word of God and smoke comes from a spec yes he's not always been involved in this but he actually started off as a pastor and what time he took his deacons aside and his was a much larger Ministry I think he had somewhere in the area 12 to 14 on board at the time calculate to talk about the various aspects of ministry that he ought to be involved in and to give an approximation of how much time they bought that you want to spend on that in the average week installed a independently worked on the on all those numbers and when they came together he tallied them putting them all together and again this probably goes back 20 maybe 30 years now but at that time when he is everything that that people believe that should be a part of ministry when you get it all together the average out the numbers from each of the deacons he came to an average work week of about 114 hours now if you take out if you take out certain aspects of just living that is a status a significant as a significant amount of time what's the point that he tried to make in the point that he wanted to make it all that was this it is important it is important Louisa Church understand our various responsibilities what is it that is expected of us in the role of powder in the role of Sunday school teacher Junior Church worker Nursery worker whatever but the most important question to ask is what is God's Azar roll what is our responsibility and as soon as we work through this and if You observe Us in the weekend in the weeks ahead as you see area maybe a change in our lives you can be assured that they come from the exposure to the passage because what is most important is what does God say is our responsibility before we get there I want us to remember some foundational truth that we've seen up to this point truth number one because God created it it is God's will for the church to grow in fact the very first message and this is even get into my notes in the back of the bulletin yet because we're going to personalize this even more but if you go all the way back to the very first message that I shared with us Canaan Bible Chapel where you can insert the name of what everybody believed her to be throw it God designed it that way and God's plan is that every Church be a growing Church but God also designed it so that Church itself contributes to its on routes that it's not a an individual or a group of individuals but it is the body working together that accomplishes what God defines as growth Ellen number three God is the one who places and tables and uses human agents to accomplish as well little personalized that even further so that you I can understand that statement implications for Canaan Bible Chapel today number one because God created it it is God's will for Canaan Bible Chapel to grow let's start with that because God created it it is God's will for Kaden Bible Chapel the grill and what have we done yet or six weeks into the study whatever we done yet we haven't defined what that word and to be honest with you we're not going to cover it for two more weeks but there's a reason that all wait until later in the passage to Josiah bear with me we're almost there but let's start with this understanding cuz God created it it is God's will for number to God has designed Canaan Bible Chapel in such a way that each of us should be contributing to its growth however that might be so God created Tina Bible Chapel and he is design Canaan Bible Chapel in other words God has to go back to what has turned it talked about last week God has gifted the church in such a way that each part contribute to the growth of the church to the growth of the body every person playing their parts God designed it that way cuz I will get with him today and I think about those two for one reason or another aren't able to be our church family I have to come to the grips with the fact that God's going to put it together this way 3D designs it and it was free God has placed us here is enable and wants to use us to accomplish as well so just as much as I look out over the group and I say I realize that God is the one who designed it is put this group together in the way that he has you going to get that understanding as well if he's just in reinforcing our commitment to one another when we realized. And that's what your troop of the person who stands behind the pulpit but that's true for every single person who's in the deal everyone who says that they are a part of Kingdom Bible Chapel God has placed you here he placed you in this family and he is enabling you and he wants to use you to accomplish his will in this cuz he do that going to look at two things today I jokingly said to someone the other day you don't normally have been tests for Nick I said this in the office Thursday is it normally the standard three points in a poem and that that's what makes up a message I'm about to break that some of you might say how long will you be no I only have two points if you look at your if you look at your outline their two points did Paul give those that are important to our understanding of how God grows the church Point number one is God instruments for the growth of the church how does God grow his church he uses people he is a jerk a little reading on his first 11 in this thing a lot of times. A 11 but the thought continues into November 12th and some prophets and some evangelist installing pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the Saints there are actually several even beyond what we would normally think of there are several different categories of people that the first rib we're going to call the establishes establishes that comes from the first part of her and he gave some Apostles and some prophets and some evangelist in other words he's are in the reason why I use the term establisher if these are individuals that God would use to help established local Turkish we're actually gay Annie's versus a progression of how God has worked throughout her history it started with the apostles it started with the group these are specially appointed commissioners of Christ now that might cause some confusion today because there are some there are some religious and it is religious organization that will designate or appoint or call certain people Apostle who said this is Apostle Sellersville but there's actually no foundation for that in scripture whatsoever apostleship was something that was 40 year old church that were very specific qualifications for these they were appointed by a particular individual but their role as the church grew and as we came into possession of the completed scriptures their rule phased out as they died off is Apostles the two passages in particular that you could note regarding this I'm going to have to turn back to Acts chapter 1 the other passages Luke chapter 6 and burst 13 referencing Jesus who is the one who established to the apostles were obviously fine and lose 6 lose the Pelt of the calling of the original disciples and it says that he kills 12, also named apostles spell the word other disciples of Christ round his Earthly Ministry you know that right I just liked was a follower student price and there were others throughout what they're worth certain number there were the original 12 that he chose for special role they were specially appointed Commissioners that he chose himself and he gave them the name he called them apostles if you go back to Acts chapter 1 Jesus Christ has now been crucified you've been betrayed by one of his own by one of the original disciples apostles cool became so overwhelmed with grief over his betrayal and ultimately Jesus crucifixion then he went out and took his own life and that left the early church weather today at 7:11 but I'm in Astoria the scripture the decision was made that there needed to be another one to take his place and then that chapter 1 verses 21 and 22 We Now find out through the thank you for the disciples to come together to Define who does God want to replace Judas was no longer with us and notice the qualifications of 21 and 22 are four of these men would your company moments beginning from the baptism of John is that the same day that he was taking up from us so someone who has walked with us again at Disciples of Christ consistently one do you want to be a witness with us a b Resurrection so they not only need to do a follow him but they needed to have seen the resurrected Christ narrows it down quite a bit. shows us that this is something that is obviously not for today considering none of us have seen the resurrected Christ none of us were there groups and yet they are foundations you read through the Earth chapters of Acts there are very important piece to the development of the growth of the early church got to go back to Ephesians chapter 4 among the establishments you not always says the apostles but he also described the prophets play me some Robin if I say the word Prophet who do you think. Are Elijah me another one Isaiah Daniel Jeremiah Memphis Ezekiel we could go on and on and what about all those share in common where we were in all of them girl found in the Old Testament is he talking about the Old Testament no he's not this idea of a prophet speaking in this particular context refers to especially equipped there we go again a specially-equipped speaker for Christ Who deliver truth before the written scriptures were completed they delivered truth before the written scriptures were completed so it's not we don't want to confuse them with Israel profit when think of a woman think of the Daniels are the Isaiah's of ezekiel's of the Jeremiah wear the Nathan to her or others that we see an infusion chapter actually he's in chapter 2 make sure my notes sorry if he's in chapter 3 will come in a fusions to in just a moment what are the seasons chapter 3 in verse number 5 pause talking about about the growth of the church he's talking about the people that God has used in it verse 1 says with this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ send files if you have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given to me to you words how that by revelations he made known unto me the mystery what does mystery that while he's talking about it's about how and it's actually described and it's in Ephesians chapter 2 how God was able to take Jews and Gentiles at enmity with one another their backgrounds were different their religious experiences for different their upbringing would give everything about one thing close to God in the other far from God one direction action with the law and the promises of God of the other no connection with that unless he connected with the children of Israel and it doesn't seem possible that those two could ever come together the mystery is that God is taking those two. put them together and made them one that he calls the church today important principle for us to understand as we move forward that there is not a gentile Church in the Jewish church but that Christ created the jerk kid's body do it is comprised of Jews and gentiles which of other ages First Wives that with which in other Ages was not made known Unto the Sons of men there were things about this that people in the past just didn't get they didn't understand as it is now revealed under his Holy Apostles and Prophets by the spirit Paul says the foundations of the church lay by the apostles built by the prophet continue the third group the Evangelist remember we're not talking about talking about those that are currently in existence in those are the phased out but what is it that God has used to build up churches to start churches if you look at the history of our country how were Minnie Mouse I would probably say in the early days of our country how are most the whole bodies of believers you add a tentative Angeles it will travel from Community to community that's just a church in one Community but they had small body is Believers in areas all throughout their District or whatever you want to call them that they would rotate among and they would kill for the spiritual needs of those groups of people closest Church's good ultimately developed to the point Thank God LED them a pastor who could stay and could Minister unto them exclusively as a body the body of the leavers Thor Angela said it's Ruth me and the proclaimer of the Gospel in one sense all of us should be Vangelis all of us to be sharing the Gospel wherever God leads it Paul tool Pastor Timothy and 2nd Timothy 4 do the work of an evangelist but this refers Lords with individual uniquely gifted by God to share the good news of the Gospel broadly and effectively think of it this way I think of Paul's me Paul would be serving in this capacity for instance whenever he went into the city share the gospel in the song new church planted we see an example of this and we haven't gotten to him yet specific although he is referenced we find one called by that name and Acts chapter 21 his name is Philip he first appears in the book of Acts in actually after 6 at the selection of the original disciples of the surfing but as the church grows got a point into larger and larger roles to the by the time we encounter the next chapter 21 but he is called Philip the evangelist from the accounts and actually find them in the spring and Sumerian Acts chapter 8 in Gaza has Otis and the cities between is Otis and says re-enact 8:40 before he finally settled in Century 21 proclaimer of the Gospel community all the time communities where there is no gospel witness not just another country but there are of our own country that are largely out of an July communities that never heard the gospel and we need people who are willing to go where will you respond to God's call not to go over there but also to go over here well that's a part of God's plan B uses these instruments for the growth of the church so the first group that we see are the start with her but then from the established or see most of the equipment he gave some Apostles and some prophets and Sullivan and some pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the Saints considering the progression and the use of the words in the context as well as the descriptions throughout the New Testament I believe Paul is describing one person with two roles in mind when he says and he gave some pastors and key set two different groups but he specifically referring to one group now there's a reason for the has the idea of one who is called to Shepherd when he was called to care for Squad of God I've heard it described the times as this is kind of the administrative side I want to be careful though that we not get too caught up in that idea of an administrative side as if somehow this is the CEOs so much more personalized idea is someone who was a pastor I'll come back to that in just a moment but then he also uses the work features teacher has one who's been called to in the body of Christ this is one who is more this is an individual who's more focused on a particular area studies and at this point and yes I'm going to come back and pastors and teachers in just a minute the most studies and at this point in the launching of the goals in the ministry of those poor grip but there's one other group is mentioned in verse well they contribute to the growth of the body did you catch what it is cuz I read it the beginning of his 12th anybody want to take a stab at it Racine the establishes Racine Equippers what's the third group The Saints the Saints are we're going to call them the member although please again for the purposes of our study do not confuse this with formal membership within the local body of Believers we're talkin about everyone in a Time who knows Jesus Christ as their personal savior what do you think of that next up for my membership or not sing great word was a lot of images in this way her mind because we think we tend to confuse to work sayings as the super Christian these are the ones were set apart from anybody else it was certainly greet your write the word sing me a sacred or set apart and when you do is study of the newt I'm at work you'll learn that this isn't a super Christian it's a term that applies to every Christian friends of here earlier today you know Jesus Christ as your personal savior God calls you a thing you say you don't know you don't know my life I'm not talking about that rather if you know Christ as your personal savior you have been set apart by God Secret in his sights and the point of always trying to make with this list in this contact is that every Christian has every part of the body of Christ contribute to the growth of your next week Pastor Nick has the privilege of focusing on the role of the Saints tickets to talk to all of us Minecraft today is the holding for just a couple of more on that previous group pastors and teachers how is God plan to use them for the body of Christ and the answer is found in the rest of the verse number 12 with looked at. let's talk for just a moment about God's plans for the growth of the church works well for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ how much do something I don't normally do I'm going to give you the rest of the outline because I want to do it all at once because I want you to see actually the progression and I'm going to go back for just a second and focus on the individual part but here's what he saying those are described in verse 11 and the beginning of his 12th have the task of this equipping the Saints so that they can do the work of the ministry which is the edifying of the body of Christ there's a slow there's a progression to this that does not end with a. A 3.0 and a 1/2 you do this you do that that's not what you say rather you saying this does this with this group so that this group is equipped to do this which produces this there's a natural floater what does it mean first is equipping why did I use the word equipping because it's not in the verse for the perfecting of the Saints the word translated perfecting their as the idea is completely furnishing providing everything that one needs or giving someone all the tools they need to accomplish the job some of you might remember this box or I might have had another one last time I used this it was a slightly different color it was more this color I believe the last time that I talked about this project has a putting together originally Neyland Stadium and now Beaver Stadium was something I was actually just getting started on putting together Penn State's football stadium in miniature Lego form I want to tell you let me tell you how much progress I've made since that last time I brought this up Zippo been a little busy had a few things going on and that can't still starts I think level three is what I completed the most of the pieces in still in here but there is one piece or part that is especially important it is not contained in any of these little bags of miniature Legos by the way this is just one of it doesn't match that I have in you the most important piece in this is this spell I grew up on Legos like those are fairly easy to if if you mess something up it's fairly easy to grab it with both hands and kind of pull it apart and put something else in its place but if you've ever looked at the kids like the one that I'm working with those blocks are not the thick blocks about my but rather they are blocked about like this in depth and so if I make a mistake it is very easy to do I can tell you that much. Because I made many mistakes sometimes I realize two or three levels later the mistake that I made. go back and take the take apart every previous level just so I can get to the one piece I cannot just reach in and grab a piece and pull it out I need this one they call this a my bar I know guys this doesn't look like any prybar you've ever used and honestly I would not recommend that you use this on any other project other than working on projects like this this is an essential tool that is provided by the company to complete the projects without it if I make a mistake I'm stuck I'm hurting and I can't go to the store buy one because most even hobby stores don't have them I got the order one special order online me while I sit and stare at the thing wondering how I could have been such a bonehead to make that kind of mistake but I had that conversation with my cell phone number what is an essential tool the company provides me what I need in order to put it together this verse describes one of the primary roles of the pastor teacher as that of helping the body of Christ find develop and use their tool use their guests to do the work of the ministry how do we do that prayer for the word in the people you know what is we're not praying for the ministry the word of God for the study of the word of God and praying for you we're relying on our own strength and Studebaker innovo the study of the word I I guess it's past your neck as far as is process of preparing preparing a message it's not something you just get up on Sunday morning and say know what I mean if you take it serious it requires time and prayer and study another name of the ministry of the word in order to prepare to equip people did you work out call them too so he says these are given for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the ministry I called it serve it because that edit part is the ministry the servant is not just those who stand behind a Pulpit and preach the word but it is you who are you who who ministered to children in Nursery or Sunday school or church it's those who work throughout the building to make sure that everything is where it needs to be on a given Sunday so that those who serve in other capacities can do what they do and I think it's laboring Peter used to work in 2nd 2nd Peter chapter 1 verse number 5 he said to add to your faith virtue of the word Virtue there has the idea of reaching a point where you can accomplish your design task why was a nun what's the purpose of a knife pick up something some would say that's the first that's the Excellence of a knife can you use a knife in other ways you can what is that its design purpose by the way you use a knife in a way other than the way it's intended you can do yourself or somebody else a lot of damage there are a lot of people just because it can be used to do other things doesn't mean that it should and my wife is hurt me say that some I don't know where I picked up that line but I find I'm driving down the highway and somebody does something and they can do what they can just kind of barely fit in front of me almost positive pilot behind me cuz I have to slam on my brakes to make sure I don't run into the back of them and I'm humble, louder than they should just because you can doesn't mean you should I probably done the same thing in my drive as a body you and I are designed to the work of the ministry together we're design do the work of the ministry together Auto Parts what parts does it take to pick up level 5 bar what take your fingers it actually starts with my brain it takes my brain my eyes my nerves my muscles my bone and my skin and probably a whole bunch of other things that I just defended the science teachers by forgetting but it takes all of those things just to accomplish that task God has designed the church so that it takes all the parts to work to accomplish is that the sir to serve for what to serve for building for the edifying of the body of Christ that's not referring to the role of one person that's referring to all of us what I work on my model Beaver Stadium I have a pattern with which I worked with Shiva common finished product the pattern shows me what the final product and each each step of the product project needs to look like if I use the provided Parts in the tools properly the same way you and I need to look to God for to our mats what the final product of the look like that's where we get to gross that's what he means and that's what we're coming to very quickly but also how to accomplish that common goal so you see verse 12 is it just about one group about one or two people what is about all of us for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body doubt this point is primarily addressed to those in the pasture teacher roll what does that have to do with me and I honestly did not know when when Pastor Nick said OG cuz we got an announcement that the secret we honestly did not know what was coming it so don't read that into this when I share with you my clothing sauce what does what we just saw regarding Pastor teachers what does that have to do to do with me as an individual number one can I ask you to pray for me pray that that Pastor Nick and any other pastors that you know would be faithful and diligent in our study and Ministry of God in both public and private settings play Force we depend on the Spurs number to could I encourage you to adjust your perspective to the ministry of the word come to view these Gathering okay walk out check I got it done would you learn to come to view this opportunity as an opportunity to be equipped for the work of the ministry God what do you want me to learn today so that I can be a better servant for you I can help you in your work of dealing with her and the number 3 can I ask you to intentionally look for ways this week that you can do the work of the ministry sharing Christ and serving others we'd play our roles utilizing the gifts given to us by God God will do what he has promised to do he will build his church father the what we have looked at primarily this morning directed at least in your word is directed to those who serve the ministry of Pastor teacher what help us to understand the role that we all play the ministry of the body of Christ unless we're all working together doing that what you called us to do utilizing the gifts that you've given us we cannot be that throwing bodies that you have designed us that it Lord I don't know how you would have us to respond individually I know how I've already responded in Hawaii I believe I need to respond to the days ahead but you know how best each one of us to respond may you give us hearts that are willing to move in to do that what you calls to do you pray these things in Jesus name
