all right could you open your Bible sleeps with fusions chapter 4 I'm going to ask a question that I asked during the Sunday School hour how many of you had to scrape ice off of your windshield this morning before you came to church I'm just trying to get a sense of who doesn't have a garage I told the Sunday school class I'm very grateful that this one of the reasons for being grateful for living next door I know what the worry about doing that to come over to church were to come over to the school although I will tell you I'm looking forward to having a garage Ephesians Ephesians chapter 4 it's great to see all of you like here this morning and I'm going to invite you to buy with me for word of prayer as we prepared it to delve into God the Father every time we hope the word you seek to communicate to us through it so I would ask that you would quiet our hearts before you if you would allow the the distractions of what's going on in our lives that distractions even things going on around us that you would allow those things to be set aside so that you can receive our full attention and so that you can speak not just to our heads but to our hearts thank you that you are truth but your son clearly reveal themself as the way the truth and the life and that because we have your word we also have the truth I doubt that you would use your truth to engage Us in the way that you strive to do so the crazy things in Jesus name amen because in our series we did a couple of weeks of looking at Grace and Truth and the life and Ministry of Jesus Christ and so I'm going to get a follow along with me and I'm going to read a few verses for Ephesians chapter 4 to remind us of the context as well as to remind us of where we've been but also where we're going Ephesians chapter 4 beginning with verse number one I therefore prisoner the Lord beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation we're with your cold with a loneliness and weakness with long-suffering forbearing one another in love endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace there is one body and one Spirit even as your called in one hope of your calling one Lord One Faith one baptism one God and Father of all who is above all and through all and then you all but I never one of us is given Grace according to measure of the gift of Christ before you say it's when he ascended up on high heel it kept tivity captive and gave gifts unto men now that he ascended what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth give it to send it it's the same also I'll send it up for above all Heavens that he might fill all things and he gave some Apostles and some prophets and some of Angeles and some pastors and teachers for the perfecting of the Saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man under the measure of the Statue of the fullness of Christ that we henceforth be no more children plus to do and fro with Terry tube out with everyone Doctrine by the flight of men and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive but speaking the truth in love may grow up into him in all things which is the head even Christ from whom the whole body fitly joined together compacted by that which every joint supply of according to the effectual working in the measure of every part because the increase of the body under the edifying of itself in love over the last couple of months we have sought answer for very important questions number one what is church growth and several weeks ago when we finally I think it was message number eight sinner series finally came to the definition which is this church growth is a Church's progression over his lifetime told them toward the goal of increasingly reflecting Grace and Truth in its interaction with others question number two what causes growth number 3 am I helping or hindering the growth of Kingdom Bible Chapel number for how can I hear Canaan Bible Chapel be a growing body our Focus today is going to Endeavor to answer that second question what causes unfortunately we don't have to go very far to find the answer first number 15 of our passage lays it out pretty clearly but speaking the truth in love may grow up into candle things which is the head even Christ throughout this passage as you'll remember Paul has been using the analogy of a physical body to describe the growth of the church so let's follow the analogy just a moment in order to make the point that we want to consider this morning of what causes the growth of the church your body needs whether you realize it or not proper nourishment nutrients in order to remain healthy and grow and just as your body your physical body needs all of those things so the church the body of Christ needs regular nourishment and the proper nutrients in order to grow according to verse number 15 the number one nutrient for growing as the body of Christ is speaking the truth in love now this morning we're going to look at speaking the truth and then in this evening service we're going to do things a little bit different from what we had been doing as we've been having more formal discussion we're going to talk tonight about how we do that how we speak the truth in love and some of you may be saying wait a minute I've got responsibilities tonight I'm going to be in the nursery I'm going to be I will be helping out with routine to be helping with the kids for truth eyewear to do something Elsa little different Two Worlds are going to record this evening service and Lord willing tomorrow that will be uploaded to the website and in an email that I'll send out tomorrow I will share that link with you since you can go directly to it so if not able to be here tonight because of all the responsibilities you'll be able to get part two part two of our message comes back to one important question what is true what is truth question that has been plaguing mankind ever since the fall for flying his mind even those considered the most knowledgeable of a society and struggle with the answer at his trial only hours before crucifixion of Jesus was asked about this deep philosophical quandary by Pilot one of those who was questioning him as to whether or not he would be fit for crucifixion and pilot say it's on the hinge on 1830 what is truth beards are really isn't all that complicated it just seems to be hard to accept a time because it demands so much from us as we'll see as we go through our study this morning what is true very simply stated truth is certainly truth is certainly there's a couple of Dimensions to that idea of Truth being certainty that we want to sort through we talked about how we Minister truth to one another number one truth tells us what is real true tells us what is real would you go back in your Bible speaks of Genesis chapter 1 I want you to see this don't just take my word for it and you may even know this memorize this at some point or another but I want you to see it with your own eyes because I want you to accept it not as something that I'm saying but something as is the very word of God Genesis 1:27 were part of the the creation in Genesis chapter 1 in the 27th verse we read this record so God created man in his owner in the image of God created he created he him male and female created he them you might not be able to understand works you might not even understand what it looks like but the fact of Truth Still Remains God clearly made a statement of what is real creative man and he created man in his own image since the fact of Truth Still Remains even if we don't completely understand it our responsibility ability to accept it because it's true the truth tells us what's real truth also tells us what's right and turn the Exodus chapter 20 Exodus chapter 20 so true tells us what is real statement of fact if you will but truth also tells us what is right or what is wrong what is morally factual or what is not 23:14 very simple statement five words that also not adultery sounds like a very simple statement does it not and yet in the culture in which we live today increasingly over the last 20 or 30 years especially we have seen this element of Truth has come to be less and less accepted does it make it any less truth does it make it any less right or wrong know it doesn't but because God stated it because our absolute Authority stated it we have a responsibility there's an expectation of behavior this statement of what is Right does not hinge on her acceptance is this case in this case you have a statement from a higher authority up to expectations of behavior our responsibility is to live by that I'll take it a step further Jesus go to Matthew chapter 5 obviously the point of my message this morning is not to hone in on the sin of adultery or were lost or any other specific sent but simply to show you that truth demonstrate that witches real and that which is right Matthew chapter 5 Jesus says starting a 27 and he does this with a couple of elements of the Old Testament law he says in verse 27 you have heard that it was sent by them do not commit adultery and even in their generation they would at least verbally acknowledged that is true that is right but then Jesus build on it on that statement of Truth in verse 28 but I say to you that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart this is the revelation of Truth for the one who sees not. the outside but one who sees on the hearts this issue of the absolute nature of Truth is one with which our culture struggles but it is one on which the body of Christ must and if we are going to be a growing driving body of Believers we have to start with a commitment to truth sub someone answering that question what is truth it leaves us then to the question that that comes from our pastors rookies and chapter 4 how do we speak the truth how do we communicate truth or you can answer that question you need to understand where we find truth because there are a lot of sources in our world that claim to contain truth so what is the source what is the source of Truth source of Truth in Scripture scriptures RV source of Truth a wonderful supplement to our study night if we were to take the time to do it maybe somewhere down the line we will do this would be to look at Jesus prayer and John chapter 17 here we have Jesus just before his crucifixion praying for his disciples and what's amazing is two thousand years ago we've got Jesus praying for us and in the middle of that prayer there is this powerful statements in John 17 verse 17 sanctify them through thy truth Daddy has changed them through your truth make them holy through your truth by word is truth what Jesus is doing there is is very importantly drinking from Concepts together so that you and I will understand when they're the questions are raised regarding truth and who can be trusted who can be relied on who do we listen to and how don't you listen to didn't know that they a voice to which we can listen to it will not change and it will not let us down because it gives us truth and that is the word of God sanctify them through guy truth died word is but you're glad that God's given us the truth tell you where we are living in such a confusing age or maybe the better way to say it is we are living in such a confused so many voices trying to redefine truth or so many voices that are are trying to tell you all this is the voice you listen to In This is the boys you shouldn't listen to and all of them conflicting with one another and never quite sure which direction in return but God has given us the truth that that scream through all the noise through all the static do we have out there to give us a clear and concise absolute which we can live God is Not only given us the truth but his Believers he is also giving us the opportunity to communicate truth is given is chosen means of communicating truth turn the 1st Corinthians chapter 1 1st Corinthians chapter 1 throughout the day we're going to talk about a couple of different ways by which the church can communicate truth this morning I'm going to do a little bit of introspection if you will I'm going to focus a little bit on Pastor Rod myself does the bible places a high level of responsibility in the pastor of the local church to make sure that he is effectively and consistently communicating truth 1st Corinthians chapter 1 I want you to pick up with verse number 18 poet already encountered in his ministry and opposite to the message of the Gospel to the proclamation of the Gospel we talked about this summer school class this morning, and Acts chapter 9 right on the heels of Paul salvation solid Appling is already prepared the gospel and that caught the attention of the very people that he commissioned him earlier to go and persecute followers of the way to persecute Christians and now he's advocating for them he's supporting them is actually providing proof for the message they have been espousing along and that reason is not just the eye or the anger of those that once supported him and they turn on him and Acts chapter 9 towards the end of the chapter to work right about the middle of the chapter actually it says that going to such a degree that they saw the way to kill him and it wasn't just the personality of the Apostle Paul but what really angered them what is it that that drove them to such and I'll call it what it is such Insanity that they would seek the life another human being it was because of the messages he breached and Paul may have been reflecting someone on that and other experiences when he wrote this in 1st Corinthians chapter 1 beginning with Verse 18 He says for the King of the cross the publication of the of the Proclamation of the cross the message of the Gospel is to them that perish foolishness turn on Save the World Hears it and they said you got to be king you're telling me that I have sinned I have offended some unseen individual that is out there that I can't touch I can't see I can't hear and that because I say and against this is God so called that they are for my eternal Destiny hangs in the balance and then if I don't get right with this guy that I can't see and I can't hear in that I can't I'm going to spend my life I'm going to spend eternity in in constant orbit torment or the Lake of Fire Porsche we back it has been on the Earth saved the message of the cross is the power of God I think it's important that we we consider that verse for just a moment considering part of what we're here to do today and that remember the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ that offers of Salvation the tie that binds us together as Brothers and Sisters in Christ is this the Oscar safe it is the power of God I meant a person cannot fully understand cannot fully appreciate all that takes place when we observe the Lord's table when we were member Jesus Christ who came to this earth got in human flesh to Diane across to pay for my spending at penalty so that I can be brought into a personal relationship with God the preaching of crosses to them a portion but I'm not sure what your saved it is the power of God for it is written goes on to say I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and will bring nothing the understanding of The Prudent where is the wise where is the disputer this world hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world for after that in the wisdom of God the World by wisdom knew not got it please by the foolishness of preaching the proclamation of the Gospel to save them that believe in case you doubt Paul's commitment to preaching consider what he writes to Timothy in the last book that he wrote before his own death and 2nd Timothy chapter 4 is he right to a young man of protege if you will someone that his mentor through life and Ministry We Believe Timothy have been saved under Paul's Ministry and now Paul is so I can guide him through through Ministry and to guide him into what it means to be a servant of God what's so important that you would tell him with his with his final breath he says 2nd Timothy chapter 4 verse number to Creech but he doesn't just say preach he says preach the what's the next word word notice again the connection between preaching in the word of God preach the word be instant in season and out of season reprove review exhort with all long-suffering and Doctrine he remind Pastors in 1st Timothy Chapter 5 in verse number 17 let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor especially they who labor in the word and Doctrine through the points if a church is going to be a growing Drive body than the preaching and teaching of God's word should be one of the main focus of the pastor I'm in detention how many people like to eat I mean if you're being honest with me right now okay I know every hand every hand in this room goes up we all like to eat how many enjoy going out for dinner how many of you I know I really want to risk when I going to ask questions about food in here how many of you really enjoy a good steak dinner let me see your aunt before I saw those hands go up anybody hungry yet hanging in there we got a little bit longer you'll be okay I'll get you out of here in plenty of time to get to dinner I love a good steak that and I love I love good food I love good food so much that one of my favorite on TV is the Food Network and so if I'm not eating food I'm watching things about food and I'm fascinated with watching how a chef someone who is is really expert at their craft will take the time and the energy and almost put some love into a plate of food that they then presented someone else to consume so if you're going to be doing that this week some of your focus is already turned I'm not going to ask you how many of you taking the freezer out of the freezer yet but the turkey out of the freezer this is what I get for talking about food okay but you're thinking call those elements in my wife and I we've been working on we know what's the menu going to look like and I'm consoling in every year I say the same thing at the end of the meal you spend so much time preparing that me and making sure that everything is timed just right the food comes out at the hot food comes out really hot and cold brew comes out really cold and everybody gets to enjoy it you spend so many hours and preparation it takes it's like 20 minutes and people are already going I can't eat another bite pasta stuffing or I mention one thing that my grandparents used to say you know about your sufficiency being suffonsified said that last week my favorite of course and you've heard me say this before is my mother's father grandpa Pete would always say after Thanksgiving dinner he would grab his fork and he was sit back with that contented look on his face even look at my grandmother with great love I'm ready for my he could have skipped over that this is where I get it by the way you could have skipped over the main course and going right to desserts but it takes so much time and effort and the of the measuring of a various thing I wanted to craft a a really fine meal and when you sit down to do a dinner at a restaurant what you're trusting is that the chef in the back of the cook in the back has taken the time to properly prepare everything that is on your plate so that you'll get the full nourishment and you'll get the full benefit out of what's please before you a part of the responsibilities of big part of the responsibility the pastor Nick and I have in Ministry is that why spent sufficient time and effort and prayer immersing ourselves in God's word and relying on the spirit of God help us understand God's word so that we can prepare God's word to be able to set before are you so that you can feed on the spiritual Feast of the word of God and that is a heavy heavy responsibility if a church is going to be a growing thriving body then the preaching and teaching God's word out to be a primary focus of our time and attention but he takes it a step further let's think not just about the communication of Truth speak the truth but what about the recipients of Truth and I like the statement out of a dr. gene Taylor's book entitled The thriving Church he said this in a growing body members arrived and by church members he's not just talking about you know what your name is formally on the rolls and you can vote he's talking about everyone who who regularly Faithfully attend the body of believers Safeway 10 to the church family Bonnie church members arrived with expectations not of their own comfort and fulfillment of their preferences but expectations of God and his word they expect a nutritious meal for the word of God that has been thoughtfully and carefully prepared throughout the week but if you're truly going to take and the new treant of Truth the most important one then you also and I talked about the responsibility Pastor Nick and a half but you also if you're going to get the full benefit of a nutrient that number one news a growing body the truth of God's word you have to be willing to do the work necessary to get every nutrient possible from the meal eating is not a pasta thing is it you don't sit down at the table look at the food and say all that was delicious. You got to pick up a fork and a knife you got to pick up a spoon you have to consume it if to do the work it's not just enough to stare at it and say oh it look so nice it must taste really good I'll bet you there's a lot of nutrients how much I could really benefit from that yet how often do we approach God's work yay how many times do we even approach Sunday morning and say I'm going to sit in the passive Observer I'm going to take I'm going to observe it and I'm not willing to pick up the fork and a knife in the spoon and consume it the way they should and we walk out of here saying it's been great to be in the house of God but if we really gotten the nutrients the nutrition that we need from God's word I was introduced several years ago and again this is my typical disclaimer I remember Pastor Dave Cristal used to have it at the bottom of the nose every single week just because we mention book or writer or person does not mean that we 100% and doors everything that he I believe that there is something to be learned from everyone but you also have to be very careful because as human beings we're fallible prone to fail it's all going to mention the name of a book as a good book and I've learned a lot from it I cleaned a lot from it but at the same time I would not necessarily say I endorse everything that this person this person teaches the book is entitled expository a practical handbook for hearing and doing God's word written by Ken Ramey he challenges us to be more than just passive hearers when we sit down to the pier king of God's word and the preparation and what I'm sharing with you does not come from this book but it is a book that I would would recommend that you get and that you you are awesome principal from it for your own personal growth I want to give you some tools that you can use that may help so that you glean more from a message as preaching it's not just with her pastor Nick or myself or doctor bats go when was with us last week or evangelist play shank that's going to be with us in worried or whatever it might be I want you to be able to each week to be able to draw from God's word and there's some things that you can do both in the service and before and after the service to get the most nutrients from the meal you're ready for this number one can I challenge you to pray for the password be prepared throughout the week don't wait until Sunday to think about Sunday could I ask you could I plead with you to pray for pastor Nick and I each week as we're going through the week and we're preparing we're feeding on God's word and we're preparing it so that we can we can help to feed you but let me ask you to pray as we prepare throughout the week number to I would encourage you to have do yourself of every opportunity possible it's a part of the point that the scriptures making Hebrews chapter 10 that reminds us not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together with the manner of his arm is but so much the more as you see the day approaching advantages of the opportunity to be exposed to God's word and yes it involves Services hear it at church but it also involves other opportunities throughout the week to be in the word of God take advantage of every opportunity possible to be in God's word Denver 31 of encourage you to engage your whole being and worship I'm not going to ask you what your morning was like today before you came to church I know what most Sunday mornings are like whether you're the one preaching or either you're the one who has the privilege of sitting in the Pew to feed on God's word I know what Sunday morning tends to be like in Satan loves it Satan wants us to come to be able to come into this building or to turn on her computer your phone or however it has to be there watching us online or are currently watching us and loved to have us thinking about we're hearing it's kind of going in one here but we're thinking about something else some disagreement that you know parents you had they wouldn't quite get out of bed as well as they do on Monday morning when they're so excited to go to school yes, planted firmly in cheek on that statement I know cuz I get to see the kids when they come into school Sunday morning they tend not to be as excited what whether it's that or that's the alarm didn't go off or the car didn't start or there was frost on the you know when you had to take extra time in order to clean it off so you can get the church or something's going on this week you're thinking about all the preparation for Thanksgiving dinner or maybe you're getting ready to make a make a trip someplace or whatever it might be we can easily come not thinking about God and his work but instead focusing on other things engage your whole being and worship spend time as you walk in the door praying and saying God I'm here to meet with you I'm here to learn you and I want to set aside all of those distraction so that I can focus on you and on your word engage your whole being in prayer here's an idea one way to engage your whole being and worship take note take notes sometimes we make it easier on you than than others sometimes we have PowerPoints in which we try to give you some of the highlights or even some of the application point that you can write down to what you can reference later on sometimes sometimes we even go so far as to put some notes on the back of the bullets in her to put it in certain on the inside of the bulletin to give you a tool to help you to engage with the pathogen to be focused on on that particular item the more senses that you can evolve in worship good morning gauged you will be in worship Sausage Kitchen take notes and then another one this is only been in recent years some of this is really come in and I really start to think about this what if it's one that you might think about we thought about how can I prepare over the week behind me how can I be ready for that day what can I do in during that day but what can I do in the week ahead for what I've heard this morning go back over the materials part of the benefit of taking note is that you have something to go back to you jot down something in particular the God has been teaching you the one get this it doesn't do you any good if that scrap of paper get lost if you don't go back to it so take those notes and go back we've in recent years and we've updated some things on the website so that you can go back and on our video the video page of our website you can go back and you can watch the last 4 weeks worth of messages but now we even archive them even further there's a page on the side where you can click on and you can go to archives of messages throughout the year that we preach. Maybe there's a particular series that we done like this when we have a special page just for this series that will stay on the website well I got to go back and refresh the materials hearing it more than once helps Colette stick or maybe sometimes you're so busy taking notes there's some things you missed you got a chance to listen to it again maybe you pick up some new things that you didn't capturing the service go back over the notes in the message throughout the next week but come with this understanding every time together in the word is a life-giving strength reduced meal that energizes growth in the body what did he say in verse 15 but speaking the truth in love may grow up into him in all things which is the head even Christ so that God uses his word to develop what's the fullness of Christ thank you I love you I got a few more gold stars today Grace and Truth God uses his words when still Grace and Truth into our lives so that we can minister to others now pastors are not the only ones were responsible to speak the truth I focus on that this morning this letter is addressed to the whole believers so that means that everyone has a role in speaking the truth in love but what does that look like well we're going to take that next step this evening and we're also going to see it means to speak the truth in love
